How Prepared Are You to Teach Reading and Writing?

Reading failure is the overwhelming reason that children are retained, assigned to special education classes or given remedial services. The long-term consequences of poor reading achievement are well documented in terms of lower quality of life indicators.

Teaching reading is a complex process. Effective literacy instruction is a job for experts. It is also an overwhelming job for which many teachers feel ill prepared. This site will assist you in recognizing the stringent demands of effective literacy instruction and in assessing how prepared you are to provide children birth through 8 with the crucial content and skills necessary to read and write at appropriate levels. It will also direct you to a number of resources to assist you on your journey to becoming an effective literacy educator.
