Reading failure is the overwhelming reason that children are retained, assigned to special education classes or given remedial services. The long-term consequences of poor reading achievement are well documented in terms of lower quality of life indicators. Teaching reading is a complex process. Effective literacy instruction is a job for experts. It is also an overwhelming job for which many teachers feel ill prepared.
